Water Sculpture

The Gem is a monumental stainless steel water sculpture inspired by a cherished glass heirloom once owned by Barton Rubenstein’s grandmother. This small gem-like object, believed to be a token of appreciation for her philanthropic support of the arts, embodies the very essence of timeless beauty and craftsmanship.

As light plays across each plane, the sculpture transforms into a living, holographic presence, its reflections shifting and evolving with every viewpoint, echoing the timeless allure of a gemstone’s inner fire.

As a visual scientist, sculptor, and visionary, Barton Rubenstein has long

been captivated by the precision of geometry and the mesmerizing

refractive qualities of materials, especially diamonds and holographic forms.

The interplay of light within these structures, where reflections multiply and refract in seemingly infinite dimensions, is a constant source of inspiration in his work. Much like a master jeweler reveals hidden brilliance through the careful shaping of a gemstone, Rubenstein explores how form and surface can manipulate light, creating dynamic visual experiences that shift with every angle.

In The Gem, these principles are elevated to a monumental scale. The sculpture can be created to desired specifications, ranging from 10 to 20 feet in height. Crafted from stainless steel for its exceptional durability and luminous reflective qualities, its faceted surfaces evoke the precision and purity of a finely cut diamond.
