Vertical Sculpture in Suspension

"Shad" is a series of fish shapes with undulating stainless steel surfaces, referencing the visual distortion when looking into a river. Shad is a critical indicator of marine health for the Potomac River in Washington, DC.

In the 1800s, over 20 million shad fish were harvested each year, until they were severely depleted. More recently, they have made a comback, especially with conservation efforts, including the removal of plastic, a reduction in pollution, and better management of sewage runoff during storms. Planting river grasses has also proved to be an important contribution to the Potomac River’s health, a place where fish and marine life thrive.
